My rpg group's L5R campaign is still on vacation, so we're starting up a 3.whatever D&D game. I, like 99% of my generation's gamers, had (A)D&D as my first rpg game but I haven't played it in years and years. I am thus feeling like I don't know how to play a game I used to GM for. It's a very strange feeling, though I expect it to pass.

My character is a 16th level paladin with a griffin war mount and a holy avenger. I feel so shiny! I named her "Thistle", a joke that no one else caught (though I really didn't expect any to, and it's an extremely minor joke anyway). Thistle is already severely disappointed by the moral caliber of her companions, two of which murdered our bugbear prisoner after we were done questioning him. Gentlemen, gentlemen, we are supposed to be better than people like that.

Meanwhile two other members of the group had gone back to the street where we had grabbed the bugbear and found that his dead horse had been eaten. The tracks of whatever had been doing the eating led off towards and area with a lot of taverns, which led to the following exchange:

Me: Good grief! You've crossed the path of a bar crawl!
Sean: Yeah, I guess the Huskers must have lost today.

Much time was lost in the ensuing tacky humor this inspired, but this was D&D so you really couldn't claim that it destroyed the mood of the game.

So, a good time was had by all. Next week I'm guessing we'll have to stage a rescue mission of all the townsfolk the bugbears have been kidnapping, and then we'll have to do something about the Evil Fog that's been showing up in town each night. No rest for heroes!
