Crochetnista alert!

Tonight on Climbing the Third Stair: Nancy attempts to make friends with the 'Insert Image' function! And then goes on to post photos of indeterminate quality, featuring her latest crocheted purse!
I'm feeling somewhat vain about this purse, because it is the first one where I have started with a concept. All of my previous purses came about because I had a yarn I wanted to use ("Hmm. I fell totally in love with this sapphire eyelash I found in the discount bin--now what do I do with it?") or a technique I wanted to master ("Hey, that's a really cute stitch--I wonder if I can figure out the directions?) or some combination of the two (This really cute turquoise wool I got at the thrift store is a little moth-eaten--but I've been wanting to play around with felting and now I won't have to worry about ruining a good yarn!"), so this was new territory for me.
The concept I started with was "In the Garden of the Moon", and to begin it I went through my stash and collected up all the yarns I considered to be 'moon-colored'. I crocheted the body of the purse out of charcoal black wool, which was then felted. I'm really liking felting for purse construction, as it results in a fabric that is dense enough to keep pens in but is supple and nice to touch. (To be technical, I used fulling, not felting, but how many people would understand me if I said I fulled it?)
The ornaments are all free-form crochet shapes. To make them I would grab a random skein from my project bag and a hook and spend my bus rides to and from work seeing what kind of shapes I could make. I mostly went for things that were circles or parts of circles, to relate back to my moon-concept. I did do a few ivory-colored roses, but decided that they really didn't fit in with the other shapes.

And here you see the front of "In the Garden of the Moon I". I'm calling it I because I like the colors and shapes in it and might do another project with the same theme. Maybe a wall hanging?

Here is a shot of the back.

Here is a close-up of the front. The picture was taken with my computer, and I don't know if it is possible to get crisper details from it. I know that
cassandra_e has a digital camera; sometime I'll ask her to take some better photos.
