Last night while I was attempting to writewritewrite Karin called on the phone, which pretty much ended any hopes of getting something significant done. I should feel guilty, but I don't. I'm in Day 72 of my captivity and I can feel myself shredding under the double strain of meeting my obligations while trying to deal with my mother--and so I wasn't going to pass up a chance to talk to my best friend.

Our conversation had many good features. One of which was that I was reminded how lucky I am with regards to her and the man she married. Karin and I met as undergrads and we quickly became close, almost sister-like friends. This is very important to me, as my only biological sibling is a sewer rat. (My apologies to any actual sewer rats reading this journal.) When Karin got engaged I was a little afraid that this would end our friendship--I had seen it happen before. But Ami not only liked me, he quickly started to treat me like I was one of the family. As corny as it sounds, I didn't lose a friend, I gained a brother.

This means, among other things, that I am available to help mediate their landscaping controversies. Left to his own devices, Ami is a member of the "there's no such thing as too many roses" school of landscaping. Karin prefers something involving rhododendrons, red-buds, and crepe myrtles. As a rose fiend myself I can sympathize with Ami's position, but I also think roses look best planted among other things. A lot of last night's conversation was devoted to gardening.

BUT THERE WAS MORE!

Karin and Ami are dedicated rpg players and they belong to a gaming club that operates in their area. Last week in an email Karin had mentioned that my name had come up in a conversation during their last rpg meeting, so of course I had to pump her for details.

It seems that during the meeting the topic of L5R had come up, and someone had said, "Girls don't play L5R". This had annoyed Karin for a number of reasons (the "girls don't X" construction probably being the chiefest), and she had replied, "my best friend not only plays L5R, she writes for it!" "Oh," the other person said, "you must know Nancy."

I can't explain why this amuses me so much, but it does. But then, I've always known that I am easily amused.
