Today I became a salaried worker. My job is the same, but we (that is, the management layer at the co-op) decided this spring that having a salary option would be nice, not to mention helpful in getting our work done, and so after some study the GM is giving those managers who qualify the option to go salaried. I signed up quickly because my hours can get very weird around holidays and whenever I train a new night baker, and this will smooth things out considerably.
I had a very peculiar conversation with a customer this morning. He'd shown up at the door asking if we would wash some asparagus for him so he could eat it now, and while my minion was doing so I was chatting with him about vegetables. Things went well until I mentioned that the Farmer's Market now had new baby potatoes. He promptly announced, "I don't eat them. They turn straight to sugar and cause cancer." I said the first thing that came into my head, which was "Live fast, die young, leave a beautiful corpse." Later it occurred to me to wonder if he ever ate fruit, as fruit is full of sugar.
At any rate, I'm going to go home soon and fix some beautiful baby Yukon Golds for dinner. And eat them with butter.
