Jul. 4th, 2006

It's the evening of the 4th of July, and I'm hanging around my desk at work, fiddling around with my lj. This makes my life sound really sad, but happily it's not. I'm at work because this morning I and 3 great-hearted co-workers painted the walls of the bakery, and I'm currently letting the exhaust fans pull the drying-paint fumes out of the kitchen area. We ran the fans this morning when we were painting, and I'll run them again early tomorrow when I show up to move all the bakery stuff out back into the bakery, and that should take care of the paint fumes.

Working on a day you should have had off could be sad, but I'd never painted before so it was kind of an adventure. We put down one coat and while it dried Josie (Demon Queen of Suds (and part-time concert promoter)) gave the floor the scrubbing of its life. Meanwhile, Tara, Catherine and I rolled the wooden bakery racks out into the empty parking lot to scrub and repaint them. After a break we did the second coat and were finished cleaning up before noon. The bakery looks really nice now! Tara and I had picked out a pale, creamy yellow called Moonscape, and it's much nicer than the cold, dingy white we had on three of the walls. (The fourth wall had been painted adobe orange and artificial-grape purple. No, I was not the person who had painted it. No, I don't think I have to go into details on what I thought about those colors, singly or in combination.)

I went home for a shower and a nap and eventually got around to eating dinner, after which I drifted back here to run the fans. I can hear fireworks being set off even through the walls of the store. When I finally get home I might sit out on the front porch and see if any of the neighbors are lighting off any interesting fireworks, but I don't have any of my own. I've never been big into them, except on New Years when I like to set off some firecrackers at midnight. (As I explained to Tara, Catherine and Josie, firecrackers scare off bad spirits and champagne invites good spirits so firecrackers and champagne are essential for any good New Years Eve celebration.)

I'll probably go to bed early (and hope to sleep through the noise) because tomorrow is going to be, well, interesting. I need to move all the bakery stuff out of the deli, employee break room, warehouse area and the upstairs managers office and back into the bakery, and then bake a lot of bread to make up for the fact that we couldn't bake anything last night. And my arms hurt from painting: paint rollers seem to use different muscles than baking does. I was going to build deck tonight but I'm too tired even to sort through cards. I'll just throw everything Crane-flavored into a box and build something at Gauntlet, I think.

I can hardly wait to hear what everyone else thinks of the new paint. I'll have to be sure to give Tara a rank in Glory, because she was the prime mover in this project--I'd known for some time it needed to be done, but had too many other projects in play to give it attention. Tara pushed it up on the list and recruited Catherine and Josie to help, and that's what really made it happen.
