I ended up spending somewhere between two and three hours in my garden today. It was rather pleasant, really: the wind was cool enough to be refreshing after I got going and the sun was shining.
The first thing I did was plant the two tomato plants and the six-pack of broccoli I bought yesterday. Putting tomatoes out this early is a little risky, but I don't know when I'll next have a chance--I'll just keep an eye on the weather and be prepared to cover them if it gets too nippy. The broccoli was a bit of a splurge, as I have, um, at least nine seedlings that I've already started, but the ones I got yesterday are much bigger so I figured that this would extend my harvest. And really, can you have too much broccoli?
I interplanted the broccoli with the tomatoes and some of my onion seedlings between the broccoli. This allows me to use space more efficiently: I'll be harvesting the onions for green onions before they can bother the broccoli and I'll harvest the broccoli before they can bother the tomatoes. It should also help me get around the 'don't plant the same time of plant in the same pace year after year' problem--approximately 75% of my favorite vegetables are Brassicas, which makes crop rotation something of a trial.
I put down seeds for snap peas, red radishes, white radishes, Chinese kale, and Chinese cabbage. Also, I put out 4 of my mustard seedlings. I'll put the rest of my seedlings out this week, but I was starting to feel tired. My last task was to put down some cornflower seeds in a few spots; I'm looking forward to a bit of color this year. When marigolds show up for sale I'm going to buy a pack or two to scatter about my vegetables to protect them from nematodes.
And now I am going to head to sleep, as I am very very tired!
