Adventures in Management
Apr. 21st, 2009 10:30 pmI had a bit of trouble with a subordinate today. He's the new disher, and this morning for some reason he decided that he was going to give me back-talk whenever I asked him to wash something. I was vastly unamused. For one thing, I don't take that well from anyone. For another, half of his wages are paid out of my labor budget--washing the bakery dishes is in his bloody job description.
I held on to my temper reasonably well and went to lunch, resolving to pursue this in my typical way of going over his head. Technically I am one of his supervisors, but since dishers get hired by the Deli Manager I usually take any issues I have to him and let him deal with it. Otherwise we might get into a situation were we are issuing the dishers contradictory instructions, and that kills morale quick.
After lunch I had the chance to have a few private words with the Assistant Deli Manager, and I pointed out that someone needed to explain a few facts to the new guy. The ADM said, "He was really just joking around. But I told him after you left that he was pushing it too far." *pause* "Actually, what I really said was that one sentence more and you would have ripped his head off."
I hadn't been planning on ripping off anyone's head, but some guys are weird about women asserting authority so I can't say how I would have been perceived. On the other hand, if this convinces the new disher to wash my large mixer bowl without drama it will be worth it.
