Crochet thoughts

First, I must share this: knitted tofu. I don't knit, and don't plan to learn, but this is a simple enough concept that I think I could come up with a corresponding crochet pattern. As incredible as it may seem, I know people who would be charmed at receiving a pincushion in the shape of a tofu block.
As I write this it's a little after 7 am (ignore the post's time stamp, for some reason my home computer feels compelled to lie to my journal) and I'm drinking my morning tea and contemplating my new slippers. I finished crocheting them a little over a week ago and they are incredibly ugly. I'm a little miffed by this, as they didn't look that ugly in the photo. It might be that my color choice enhanced their ugliness: the model in the photo is made of two strands of cream yarn; I used one strand of white and one strand of raspberry. Or maybe I didn't follow the pattern right, though as simple as it is I'm at a loss to figure out how I could have botched it.
On the positive side they do fit and they are decently warm. They were also really fast to make: two stands of yarn and a P-hook really makes a project fly. While making my pair I was thinking that they were quick enough to make that I could consider doing a bunch as gifts, but the ugly factor kinda shoots that down. I have meanwhile started making myself a different pair of slippers in hopes of finding a pattern I like better. By next week at this time I hope to have them finished.
Beyond that I'm having trouble thinking of what to crochet next. I have no shortage of projects I should finish but I'm having vague design-type thoughts involving crochet jewelry, or crochet objects that meander in the border country between jewelry and fashion scarves. I've never been the type to be artistic, but maybe I should sit down with a notebook some evening and doodle. *ponder* Maybe something that uses embroidery floss? DMC makes like 10,000 colors of floss so there's got to be some possibilities there. (For those of you who think I'm exaggerating the number of colors: Yes, but only slightly. DMC is run by the kind of people who think it is important that their color palette include Very Dark Sky Blue. Really.)
