So apparently of late I have been so busy I haven't even had time to talk about myself. How terrible is that? Also for some time I have owed [personal profile] lemon_badgeress a review post of the lovely BPAL scents she gifted me with for my birthday. I have worn them both several times since I received them, but my sinuses keep messing with my sense of smell so I'm not sure I'm getting all the notes right. But I do intend on posting about them, because they are both very interesting.

I had Korean food today for lunch! This was a result of the fact that near my credit union there is a small "Chinese" restaurant run by a Korean couple, and so in addition to the run-of-the-mill Chinese food there is also a menu of Korean food. I was out today on a deposit paycheck/buy groceries run, so I decided to treat myself to lunch there.

I briefly considered ordering the bi bim bap, which I've had before, but decided I needed to be more adventurous than that. So I ordered something called 'jahp chae', which was described as 'sweet potato glass noodles with sliced beef and vegetables'. So far as I know I have never previously had sweet potato glass noodles in my entire life, but having had other glass noodles I was reasonably sure that this would turn out to be something I could eat. And it was: I cleaned my plate. It was a little sweeter than I like my main dishes, but I don't know if that is from the saucing or if sweet potato glass noodles are naturally sweet, having been made out of sweet potatoes. In any event, I would consider ordering it again in another restaurant, just to check it out.

The jahp chae was described as coming with kim chi, and in this case that meant four little dishes of stuff, one of which had the typical cabbagey kim chi and three other completely different pickled vegetables. My favorite is one that tastes like daikon radish slices pickled in liquid strongly flavored with something soy sauce-like, but I liked them all. None are over my tolerance level for spicy foods, which makes me suspect that the proprietors are taking into account that their clientele is largely made up of Nebraskans.

In unrelated news, I've run three sessions of the Judgement Night game and so far everyone appears to be enjoying themselves. This included the GM, for which I am grateful, or maybe I should say I am relieved. Overall I like playing more than GMing, but GMing does have its charms. I'm very glad I stuck with my idea of keeping the group small; with a larger group I don't think I could keep all the balls in the air, so to speak. It will be interesting to see how I feel about this in a few months.

I had a somewhat depressing thought today, sparked by something that had happened in Judgement Night. In the second session, the players had a fight with an Eaten on the metal fire escape of a four-story apartment building. Today I was riding the bus to my credit union, thinking about the game and what I had to do to prepare for the next session, when it suddenly occurred to me that had this happened in an L5R story, someone would have posted on the forums to argue that four-story buildings never had that kind of fire escape. Because someone always has to argue something nit-picky like that. Depressing.

We won't be meeting this Tuesday because I will be coming home from a business day-trip, but that will give me a little more time to write up the session notes and also get my GM planning for the near future done. My GM notes for the game are very, very colorful because I have about eight pens inked up and I am switching between them randomly. I am almost at the point of emptying the two Diamond 540s because they have such huge ink capacity I don't think I'll ever empty them by simply writing, but that kind of seems like cheating to me. Clearly I am a c/c kind of gal! But I don't regret buying the Diamond 540s, or the Vac 700 (which also holds a simply terrifying amount of ink) because they will be great travel pens--fill those babies up before leaving on vacation and I will never, ever need fear running out of ink.

It is now late and I'm getting tired. I think I shall post this and see if there is anything more I want to ramble about tomorrow.

Japchae is slightly sweet, I think--I don't eat it often because it is not one of my favorites, however, so I could be wrong.

The little side dishes are called banchan and basically every Korean meal comes with them, period. :-D

Were the daikon radish slices yellow? I think that's a side dish we stole from the Chinese or something but don't quote me on it. My sister likes them too. Also, if they're the radish dish I'm thinking of, those are never spicy anyway. Without knowing what else you had, some examples: The bean sprouts are rarely spicy (although I have seen mildly spicy variants, so it's not impossible) and the seasoned spinach never is. I don't think you're going to get acorn jelly where you are (I used to have it regularly because it was a regional specialty one place we lived) but that's very rarely spicy either. It really depends on the side dish.

Stuff and Nonsense

Did you go to Yang's, by any chance? I love that place.

I believe the collective name for all Korean side dishes is banchan. I had one once that was fried sweet potato stems. It was the best one I've ever had. Another one I got was jalapenos with tiny (2 - 4 mm) dried anchovies. I liked it, which surprised me.

As for having this Tuesday off - my priest texted me yesterday and asked me to go to see the Chieftains in Omaha tonight, so I was glad not to have to sort out a conflict. The show was great.
