I've been cleaning my desk at work for the past week (don't ask) and the most amazing stuff has floated back up. My John Belushi "Samurai Baker" action figure, an embarrassing number of deli tabs that I need to pay off, floppy disks with cryptic phrases written on them (my current work computer doesn't even accept floppies!).... I've also encountered a number of quotes that over the years I have scribbled, printed, and sometimes even laminated and taped to the wall of the bakery for a time.

On of them is my favorite quote from a fantasy novel that I love for a number of reasons: One for the Morning Glory, by John Barnes. This is one of the many books I owe to my friend Karin: I had seen in bookstores, read the back cover copy, and put it back. Time passed, and Karin pressed a copy into my hands and insisted I had to read it. "There is a scene where the characters eat a gazebo!" she told me. So I read it. I hope I thanked Karin for making me read it; I probably didn't thank her enough but that might not be possible.

Anyway, the quote I refound today, spoken by the character known as the Twisted Man:

"In times to come, when the magic is draining so far out of the world that a vampire can be banished by crossed sticks and a sprinkle of water, when all we do and say here will be spoken of in the brightest daylight or the darkest, wildest night without fear of bringing anything to pass, wise men will debate why there is any pain or suffering at all, and will say many foolish things and a few wise ones about it, but is it not enough for us to day, 'pain has come this way', and let it be? We do not belong to the gray, dull generations, or to the times without meaning, or to the times when meaning drains even from stories."

*cries*

I want to be able to write like that.
