So, for whatever reason the Mozilla servers were wonky for the first couple hours of Download Day, but they seem to be running well now. I downloaded Firefox 3 into my work computer because A) I was on company time, and felt obliged to do work-related things and B) if something went horribly, horribly wrong I could make our IT people fix it. But the download and install went smoothly and when I opened it up I found that it did appear to run faster than 2.whatever did. Not that I had a stopwatch or anything, but over time one does develop a feel for how long a frequently-visited page takes to load, and this was faster.

On the downside, the menu bar at the top is Industrial Bland. It's so IB that I might have to poke around and find a custom theme to replace it with. This is a measure of how truly bad it is, because normally I don't really care what my browser looks like and downloading themes involves something resembling work.

At any rate, after I clocked out of work I took shameless advantage of the office's fast wireless connection and downloaded Firefox 3 into Yamadori. The menu is even more annoyingly IB in my Mac, but I'll live.

At this time, the Download Day website is claiming 1.2 million downloads, which to my non-expert eye is pretty good for 4 hours. Also, I am still smitten by that little fox. I wonder if I could get permission to iconize him?

Yesterday I learned that Mozilla was on the verge of releasing Firefox 3. Last night I learned that there is a movement afoot to set a world record for downloaded software in a 24 hour period. You can find more information about that here:

Download Day 2008

Isn't this the cutest Firefox icon EVAR?

In the meantime, I want to proclaim my undying love for Firefox. I'll be downloading Firefox 3 into both my home and work computers, and I'll be trying to convince our (tiny) IT staff to do likewise on all the rest of the office computers. As they are both Mozilla fans (we use Firefox and Thunderbird exclusively) convincing them to get Firefox 3 isn't the issue: I just want to see if we can be part of the world record effort.

I'm home today with a bad head cold. I always feel a little guilty about staying home when I don't feel really sick, but the fact is I work with food and being "well enough" to work means being sick enough to be contagious. So here I am, soothing my cough with large quantities of ginger tea and hoping my supply of hankies will hold up.

Since I wasn't in shape to do much else useful, I decided that now was the time to get myself a real browser. I'd been using the IE4.something that my computer came with (when I bought it second-hand), and had been wanting to upgrade to something nicer for a while.

I am now the proud owner of a shiney-new copy of Firefox. Go me! I'd been using Firefox at work for a couple of months and really liked it. It didn't take nearly as long to download as I had feared (I'm on dial-up), and it installed itself with almost no effort on my part. I'm using it now. :-)

I decided to celebrate by trying out the LJ Userpic factory, which is the closest I'll ever get to making icons. It was a little frustrating because LJ doesn't actually provide directions for how to move the square or change its size--I resorted to doing random things until I got something kinda like I wanted. So yes, it is a little off but it will do. Now I'm going to go fix myself some lunch.
